Elk Mountain Campground tends to remain quieter than surrounding spots in the Black Hills, making it popular for those who like to lose themselves in the natural scene. A real appeal of the campground, besides its quieter surroundings, is the immediate access it gives to the daily guided tours of Wind Cave offered by the National Park Service. A shared restroom facility with showers is within the campground, as well as several freshwater spigots. The neighboring State Game Lodge features a gift shop, convenience store, and a Buffalo Safari Jeep Rides outfitter. Beyond the heavily scented pines that surround the 36 non-electric sites of Horsethief Lake Campground, Horsethief Lake itself beckons for an afternoon swim. Other adventures in the immediate area include hopping on the long-distance George S. Mickelson Trail, or day hiking the nearby Black Elk Peak, which is the state’s highest point at over 7,000 feet.

The Cedar Pass Lodge Gift Shop is quite large considering, and has some gorgeous Native American jewelry and artwork plus the requisite national park swag. They keep some cabins for walk- ins and reservations over the phone, at least they did in 2021. So if you can’t find the booking you want through the website, I would call and double check that there is nothing available.
When we questioned someone walking through our camp they simply replied ” we are just walking to our camp” and continued on. With all the camp staff around no one from the facility ever said anything to these rude people. Sage Creek is located off Sage Creek Road, a dirt road that prohibits motor homes and larger camper vehicles from accessing the campground. The park service will temporarily close the road after wet weather. If you enjoy antique shopping, you can find great antique shops throughout the Rapid City area. Travel outside the city to find exciting attractions such as the Crazy Horse Mountain Memorial. At the same exit and attached to these hotels is a large indoor waterpark, the Watiki Waterpark, if that gets your kids interest. You can book through the website but I couldn’t figure out how to get a specific campsite using it. The website just gives you choices of tent/ electric or non- electric/ and tells you the RV sizes the campsite can take.
